Tony Ennis
Founder & CEO

Hi There! I'm Tony

I've been building software for 15 years. In that time I've been a yc-funded startup founder, leader of large product and engineering orgs, and an agency owner. In the last few years, I've come to believe a few things:
1
As developers become more productive with AI, building teams around the dominant "Full Stack Team" model will make less and less sense.
2
The Software Agency pricing model is broken.

1. Full Stack Devs vs. Full Stack Teams

In the last decade, as each sub-discipline of web development has become more "professionalized", the average team size has grown, and we've ended up with "Teams of Specialists".
Mosts teams today have frontend people, backend people, a dev ops person, a native app person, and often the people who manage all of the other people.
That's a lot of people
This was a necessary phase, but not (we believe) symbolic of where things will end up. As AI gets better at accelerating individual developers, we think the pendulum will swing back toward smaller teams and solo developers again.

2. The Software Agency Pricing Model is Broken

As these trends continue, the amount of time it takes to build features is shrinking. But developers and agencies are still largely paid based on bums on seats (how many developers are assigned to a project) and hours worked.
Agencies paid in this way are incentivized to add more developers and create more billable hours. They justify this for now with "This is just how much it costs for all of these people", and Incidental Costs.

But there's only so long that can last.

Building The Solution

Really Good Software started with the questions "What would it take to become the no brainer way to get software built?" and "What does a software agency that's built for the future look like?"

Our answer to both of these questions is...
  • High output full stack developers that can seamlessly plug in to existing businesses and processes.
  • Transparent, affordable pricing that's not based on bums-on-seats or hours worked.
  • Available immediately and elastically (purchase as necessary, pause and resume as required).

Building this hasn't been easy. We've had to figure out a lot of different moving parts, and re-think many of our approaches and processes from the ground up.

But we've created something that is by far the best on the market in terms of quality, price, and adaptability.

Really Good Developers

We recruit, train, and manage some of the best developers in the Philippines.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are you so affordable?

In Short: Standardization and a Low Cost-Basis

Most agencies run high-touch, bespoke workflows for sales, onboarding, and project management, and have multiple specialist developers on each team.

For each new customer, they'll spend a lot of time on creating, for example, sales materials, project specs, and custom contracts before they've begun the work.

Because of how much time and energy it takes to on-board a client, these companies tend to try to extract as much value as possible from each one.

Our approach is to 1) Standardize these processes and 2) Work with lower margins.
This means we make less profit per customer, but in offering affordable pricing and lower-touch sales, can reach many more customers.

In addition, because our developers are based in the Philippines, and our other team resources (design and PM), are split across 2 to 3 projects, our cost basis is much lower than the average agency team.

How exactly does the pricing agreement work?

When we decide to work together, we'll send you our standard agreement, which states that you pay a fixed monthly fee on a rolling monthly basis. In any given month, you can give us notice that you would like to enter Skeleton Mode, starting from the next month, with a minimum of two week's notice.

During Skeleton mode we'll be on hand for any critical issues (outages), but will not work on new features. Skeleton Mode will cost 10% of the normal price (currently $672/month).

In any given month, you can give us notice that you'd like to cancel your subscription. Cancellations become effective at the end of the following month, so if you cancel half way through June, we'll officially end the agreement at the end of July. This is to give us time to finish up whatever's in the backlog and off-board the team.

What kinds of companies do you work best with?

Startups

Working with founders to turn their nascent ideas into designs, then prototypes, then real software.

Medium Enterprises

Existing businesses with thousands of customers that are using patched together off-the-shelf software, with little or no in-house tech team.

Spin Outs

Established businesses that want to digitise and productise their expertise, or create a new product based on their industry insight.

E-Commerce Businesses

Companies that need more customization than what Shopify offer out of the box.

What do you need from me in order for this to work?

Generally, we only work with companies who have the manpower and willpower to support digital products. We will do a huge amount of the creative and organizational heavy lifting, but there are areas which can't be completed without your involvement. Our key requirement is to identify a designated Product Owner who...

  • Can spend minimum one hour per week (but usually 3+ hours) on the project between brainstorming, testing demos, collecting feedback, attending calls and answering queries.
  • Has the authority to make decisions without creating blockers or bottlenecks.
  • Can help to collect and prioritise internal feedback (particularly in Slack).
  • Can help with (lightweight) acceptance testing to ensure the product works and feels intuitive before going to users.

We already have a designer. Can we work with you?

Absolutely. We have several clients who have existing design resource and would prefer to keep design in-house. This won't change the price however, as our design costs are fixed and our offer is built around an all-in price for every customer.

What tech stack do you use?

We work primarily with Ruby on Rails. This is the same framework that huge companies like Shopify, Stripe, and Github use. It also has a very large and active community.
